Eru and Melkor's Songs
Eru’s Song:
A single being is not enough
More life should see it’s beauty
Jagged mountains and rolling hills
Will forever be my duty
The golden plains, the winding rivers
The tunnels that lead to truth
The tallest falls to the smallest of stones
Every bit of it made for you
Unravelling from My fingertips
Every single star in the sky
Every blade of grass, every grain of sand
Every lake, no matter how wide
The only thing left for me to make
Is much more than the earth and the sea
A being to live and to breath and to love
A forever companion to Me

Melkor’s Song:
Hear my intoxicating melody
As it flows through your veins
Only the dust of Eru
Can be sifted from the remains
And when I finally stretch my reign
The blinding lights of my brethren
Will forever be banished
to the pits of Ungoliant’s Emptiness
I can already see My perfect creation
Where the scum birthed from Eru’s song
Will no longer plague my fiery fields
Where my song and my song only
Will be able to breakthrough unnecessary sheilds
Join me in My inevitable rise
Feast on My inevitable power
Watch as they crumble to their demise
And see every one of them cower

When it came to finding instrumental music that encapsulated these characters, I had to listen to a lot of different ones until I found something that really made sense for them. For Eru, I was a song that built up a lot. Ideally I wanted it to resemble the creation of the universe; starting slowly but having a huge build up in the middle. This is exactly the song that I was able to find. It has a very epic and cinematic climax that really made me think of Eru. Choosing the music for Melkor was a little harder. While I wanted the song to contrast with the song of Eru, I didn’t want it to be too dark, I just wanted it to be full of dissonance. I found a song that I think contrasts very well with the melody of Eru. Similar to the song of Eru, it has a large build to it, but in a more dissonant and eerie way. When it came to the lyrics, my thought process remained the same. For Eru, I wanted to write lyrics that talked about the selfless creation of middle earth and the universe. I really wanted to focus on the beauty of what he created, and the innocence of wanting to share that beauty with someone else. For Melkor, I wanted to focus more on the dream that he has of how the world should look under his rule. I wanted to showcase just how manipulative and twisted he is. Melkor is jealous that he is not able to hold the same power as Eru, so he is envisioning what the world will be like when he finally comes into power. The songs of Eru and Melkor were both filled with similar melodic and lyrical outlines, but the motivation and soul behind them are completely opposite.

These songs are great! The difference in tone between the two is really apparent. The diction used in Eru's song really emphasizes how deeply he cares about his work the creation of Arda, while in Melkor's song, you can really see the jealousy and lust for power.
ReplyDeleteYour poem really captures the beauty and purpose behind Eru’s creation. I like how you highlighted both the vast things, like stars and rivers, and the small details, like stones and blades of grass. That balance feels very true to Tolkien’s vision of the world, where nothing is too small to have meaning. The ending was especially moving, with the idea of creating beings to love and live within all that beauty, it shows Eru’s care and the hope that his children would bring the world to life.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you wrote both songs with such different vibes. Eru’s had this feeling of peace and full of wonder, while Melkor’s was dark and intense in a cool way. You wrote the lyrics to fit their personalities so well and it’s clear you put a lot of thought into matching the music to each character. Awesome job!
